Theosophy, What is it?

The thoughts of one of our members.

Kerry James Goodhew
D.Phys.Ed (Exercise Physiology & Nutrition);
D.Tchg (Secondary).

Sophia refers to wisdom and Theo to God, therefore in essence the meaning is, ‘wisdom about God’.

AristotleMy brief experience of the people involved, the little history I have gleaned about the society, and the great variety of the Dunedin public who take advantage of the numerous and highly varied open invitation topics is that there are all manner of religious beliefs and scientific pursuits held by members and visitors to this society: Including Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, Kabbalist, Taoist, Witchcraft or any other religious beliefs accommodated. Intrinsic also are quite hardcore scientific or mathematical theorists including complexity and chaos theory; Mayan Millennial Calendars; Global Warming Computer Modeling; the medical basis to benefits of meditation, etc (you name it!)

As Theosophy studies and welcomes all thought (wisdom) it is not a religion itself, but rather a place to study (hear about) what already exists whereby an individual may discover their own path to knowledge (to enlightenment).  To these ends it also has one of the best member’s libraries in Dunedin on religious, esoteric, metaphysical, and “self-help” books.

My personal sense of some of what happens at Theosophy is that it is where knowledge of a religion (knowledge of God) meets our exponentially growing scientific knowledge.  This fits quite well with me since I have come to a point where the concept of a God and concepts of human scientific knowledge I do not find to be mutually excluding positions:  On the contrary, cutting edge physics seems to be revealing God to us!
