A Forum was held to discuss who we are and what we could be doing as a local branch - June 2009

Kerry Goodhew facilitated a forum looking at ourselves. Here is a summary of the points raised in discussion. This page does not necessaryily reflect our view as a branch, but is just a collection of the views expressed during the forum.

  • The society has always had an intellectual bias and a clash between values and action/ process and structure. We could look at using more IT . e.g. skype, change titles of officers, replace archaic language. There needs to be more focus on personal development.
  • Speakers should talk on topics in which they have expertise.
  • We need to keep our focus local and work on a shared presidency. National issues are of little importance to us.
  • Our focus should be developing wisdom
  • There is plenty of room to be creative at a local level
  • We do not need the head games we hear about. Let's just do it.
  • Dunedin was founded by Scots. They are often not joiners. Publicity is really critical. There are many people who would be interested in what we have to offer if they were approached in the right way.
  • A diverse programme is good. Our mid-winter feast connected our community well.
  • We need to provide an open, flexible environment for those who come.
  • The Masters set a strong tone that we can still link into.
  • We need to develop an open form of spirituality open to all.
  • We are linked into an national and international structure. We must find ways of being flexible and open within those other structures.
  • Life will be very different in the future, we must develop in ways that anticipate the future.
  • There is always a tension between the institution and the pastoral reality.
  • We could set up a channeling group.
  • We come together as a group. We must be organised. We could look at some sort of help for the community like the Salvation Army does.
  • We should stick to what we do that is different from what others do. What is it we do that is distinct?
  • The TS locally has changed a lot. It was heavily pagan, now Carnegie Cottage is a big influence. This is a good time to consolidate.
  • Dunedin has a tradition of being radical. That is positive and needs to be supported.
  • We must be careful not to burn ourselves out.
  • There is an unseen guiding hand in our work.
  • Our mailout list has gone from 20-30 to 150. We are doing much more than 20 years ago.
  • We don't need to do everything, we can help others facilitate things we would like to see.
  • Our rooms are quiet in the day and there could be a large potential audience for day time events.
  • Often what attracts people to us is that we all seem to need something other than what the mainstream offers.
  • If there is a strong nucleus of common thought it will hold the group together.
